When comparing Beijing to Shanghai flights, begin with the place you need to reach in Shanghai. A lower fare can lose its advantage if it lands far from your accommodation or requires an awkward onward journey.
Two arrival airports, one destination
Shanghai has Hongqiao and Pudong airports. They are separate locations, so treat the arrival airport as part of the flight choice. The Shanghai government transport guide explains the available ground transport options.
Search Beijing to Shanghai flights, then group results by arrival airport. Compare suitable Hongqiao results with one another and suitable Pudong results with one another before making a city-wide decision.
Choose around your next stop
Use your hotel address, meeting location or onward departure as the endpoint. Check the transfer from each airport to that exact address. Avoid assuming that a hotel described as “Shanghai” is convenient for either airport.
If your trip continues from another airport, account for the transfer explicitly. Shanghai’s Airport Link Line connects Hongqiao Airport Terminal 2 with Pudong Airport T1 and T2 through intermediate stations; see the official usage guide. A rail connection does not eliminate the need for time to leave one flight and check in for another.
Compare the useful total
Make a short table with flight fare, baggage, arrival airport, arrival time and the onward transfer. Add the transfer cost to the ticket before comparing totals. If you have a fixed appointment, remove options that do not leave a comfortable margin.
For example, a slightly more expensive flight can be the better choice if its airport and arrival time fit your plans. That is a decision framework, not a claim that one airport is always cheaper or faster.
Remember the departure end
Confirm your Beijing airport as carefully as your Shanghai airport. Read the complete airport names on the final booking screen. Keep the confirmation available offline, including dates, terminals where provided and baggage details.
Which Shanghai airport is best?
It depends on your next address, timing and available transport. There is no universal winner for every traveller.
Can I compare only the fare?
You can, but it leaves out costs that may change the result. Use the actual airport-to-destination journey to make the comparison meaningful.
