Rome travel guide

Build a Rome stay around one major visit per day. The ancient city and the Vatican work better as separate days, with neighbourhood walks and meals around each. Reserve your first evening for orientation rather than a tightly timed attraction.

Where to stay

Historic centre

Useful for walking between many sights. Compare room noise and luggage access as well as location.

Prati

A practical base for a Vatican-focused day, with residential streets and places to eat away from the main queues.

Getting around

Combine walking with public transport for longer crossings. Keep comfortable shoes for uneven streets, and check the current official ticket options before buying a pass.

A flexible itinerary

Use these three days as a starting point. Add arrival, departure or excursion days to fit your stay.

Day 1

Ancient Rome

Give the Colosseum and Forum area most of the day. Take a proper lunch break rather than adding another major museum. Finish with a short walk that fits your energy.

Day 2

Vatican and Prati

Use your booked museum slot as the anchor. If you also visit the basilica, allow for its separate entrance. Spend the evening in Prati rather than crossing town for dinner.

Day 3

Squares and neighbourhoods

Link the historic centre’s squares and fountains at an easy pace, then choose a neighbourhood for a longer lunch. Leave room for a church or gallery you discovered along the way.

Food and local stops

Try Roman pasta dishes and compare full menu prices before choosing a restaurant near a landmark. Sitting at a table and ordering at a counter can have different charges.

Before you book

Buy timed entry from official attraction channels where possible. Check what your ticket covers, and keep a flexible plan if a site changes access.
