Acropolis and its museum
See the hilltop monuments, then use the museum to put the surviving sculpture and architecture in context. These are separate visits, so allow time for both.
Plaka and Anafiotika
Explore the lanes beneath the Acropolis, including the whitewashed houses of Anafiotika. Keep your voice down: these picturesque streets are also people's homes.
A sunset viewpoint
Areopagus Hill offers a memorable view across the city. The rock is uneven and can be slippery, so sensible shoes matter more than a perfect photograph.
When to visit
Spring and autumn are comfortable for outdoor sightseeing. In summer, plan exposed sites early and make room for a shaded lunch and an indoor afternoon.
