Where to stay
City centre and waterfront
Convenient for ferries, restaurants and a short arrival stay. Check hills on the route to your accommodation rather than judging distance alone.
Ponsonby or Parnell
Consider these for neighbourhood cafés and a quieter base. Confirm bus connections to the centre and the cost of your late-evening journey home.
Getting around
Use buses, trains and ferries for central trips. AirportLink connects the airport with Puhinui Station for onward transport. A car is more useful for wider regional outings; check trail closures before heading into outdoor areas.
A flexible itinerary
Use these three days as a starting point. Add arrival, departure or excursion days to fit your stay.
An easy arrival day
Keep the first morning light: explore the waterfront, have lunch and choose the Sky Tower if visibility is good. Leave demanding activities until you have recovered from the flight. A neighbourhood dinner is enough for the evening.
A ferry day
Choose Devonport for a shorter outing or Waiheke for a full day. Check the return sailing before leaving and allow a buffer. If you book a tasting, build the transport around it rather than hoping to fit several distant stops.
Your kind of Auckland
Spend the final day on museums and neighbourhoods, or arrange a regional nature outing. Do not set out for a remote walk without checking current access and conditions. Keep the last evening close to your accommodation if you have an early departure.
Food and local stops
Look for local seafood and the city's broad range of Asian and Pacific cooking. A café lunch can be a pleasant alternative to a formal waterfront meal.
Before you book
A central stay plus ferries can avoid several days of car rental and parking. Price the full transport plan before deciding a car is essential.
