Where to stay
Kyoto Station area
Convenient for arrival, rail trips and an onward journey. Check how the hotel connects with your chosen sightseeing areas rather than judging only station distance.
Downtown or Higashiyama
Useful for meals and historic streets. Confirm luggage access and quiet hours if you choose a traditional stay in a residential area.
Getting around
Combine trains and subway with short walks; use buses for gaps in the route. Kyoto's official guide encourages checking available transport in advance. Avoid blocking buses with large luggage when another transfer option is available.
A flexible itinerary
Use these three days as a starting point. Add arrival, departure or excursion days to fit your stay.
Eastern Kyoto
Start with one major Higashiyama temple, then wander the surrounding streets at a measured pace. Take a break before another paid visit. Respect private lanes and photography restrictions, especially around residential and working areas.
A shrine and a slower afternoon
Visit Fushimi Inari, choosing how far to walk rather than feeling obliged to complete every path. Spend the afternoon on a workshop, garden or food stop. Keep a little time free; a quiet visit can be the highlight.
Another side of the city
Choose Arashiyama or a northern temple area as the day's focus. Do not attempt both distant sides with several additional stops. Add a fourth day if you want a more thorough temple visit or a separate excursion outside Kyoto.
Food and local stops
Try local tofu dishes, seasonal sweets and market snacks. For a meal that needs booking, arrange it early and mention dietary needs clearly.
Before you book
Follow posted photography rules and never pursue working geiko or maiko for pictures. Sacred places and residential streets deserve the same consideration as any local neighbourhood.
