Where to stay
Ubud
Choose it for arts, food and inland excursions. A villa outside town may need a driver for every meal, so compare location with room quality.
Sanur or a southern beach base
Sanur suits an easier coastal stay; other southern towns offer different nightlife and surf scenes. Pick the beach and atmosphere first, then compare hotels nearby.
Getting around
Arrange a driver for longer outings and confirm the day's route and total price. Roads can be slow. Do not treat a scooter as the default budget choice unless you have the appropriate licence, insurance and riding experience.
A flexible itinerary
Use these three days as a starting point. Add arrival, departure or excursion days to fit your stay.
Two days around Ubud
Settle into your inland base and keep the first afternoon for a short walk or art stop. On the next day, combine one rural outing with a dance performance or workshop. Avoid stacking distant waterfalls and temples into the same rushed tour.
A transfer with one stop
Move towards your coastal base and choose at most one worthwhile stop along the way. Tanah Lot can work as a separate excursion if the route suits your hotel. Leave space for traffic rather than promising yourself a precise sunset arrival.
Two or three coastal days
Give the coast time of its own: a beach morning, a leisurely lunch and perhaps a boat outing with a reputable operator. Keep the last night within a manageable transfer of the airport. Boat schedules and sea conditions need checking close to travel.
Food and local stops
Try ayam betutu or a Balinese rice meal at a local warung. Ask about ingredients if you avoid pork; babi guling is a traditional pork dish.
Before you book
At temples, follow local dress requirements and avoid restricted areas. Check the official visitor levy and entry requirements before travelling; neither is a hotel charge.
